LRT & Transit

Capital Line South and Southwest Transit

Century Park, at 111 Street and 23 Avenue, has been the south end of the Capital Line since 2010. A 4.5 km extension from Century Park to just north of Ellerslie Road is under construction, with new stations at Twin Brooks and Heritage Valley North, beside the Heritage Valley Transit Centre and Park & Ride. The City expects construction to be complete in 2029, followed by testing and commissioning; no opening date has been announced. A second phase to Allard and Desrochers is planned but not yet funded.

Beyond the LRT, the southwest runs on buses from the Century Park, Southgate, Leger and Heritage Valley transit centres, including route 747 from Century Park to Edmonton International Airport. Terwillegar Drive is being widened into an expressway: Stage 2 at Whitemud Drive finished in October 2026 with a bus-only lane, and Stage 3, at Anthony Henday, began in May 2026 and is expected to take about two years.

What to watch for in Southwest Edmonton

  • Older stock around Century Park and Riverbend: about two-thirds of units in Kaskitayo and Riverbend were built before 1990. Review the reserve fund study and any planned roof, window, siding or envelope work.
  • Construction: Capital Line South work brings road closures along 111 Street and 23 Avenue until construction wraps up around 2029, and Terwillegar Drive Stage 3 has lane reductions near Windermere Boulevard.
  • Car dependence: outside the blocks near Century Park station, the southwest is car-oriented. Sample addresses in South Terwillegar and Chappelle score 42 and 21 on Walk Score.
  • Newer complexes: in buildings from the last few years, check whether the condo corporation is still running on the developer's first-year budget, how big the reserve fund is, and what Alberta new home warranty coverage remains.
  • Townhouse complexes: much of the newer southwest stock is townhouses. Check whether the plan is conventional or bare land and who pays for roofs, siding and driveways; our Edmonton townhouse guide explains the difference.
