LRT & Transit

Metro Line Plans and Northwest Transit

The Metro Line LRT ends at NAIT/Blatchford Market Station, which opened on January 20, 2024 as Phase 1 of the Metro Line Northwest extension. The City's plan continues the line north through Blatchford and along 113A Street to a new Castle Downs Transit Centre at 153 Avenue, then west to the Nakî Transit Centre at Campbell Road. Only land purchases are funded: Council approved $20 million in the 2023–2026 capital budget to buy land from Blatchford to Castle Downs, and there is no construction date. In April 2026 the area's councillor asked City staff for cheaper options, including bus rapid transit.

Today the northwest runs on buses. Eaux Claires, Castle Downs and Northgate transit centres are the hubs, with Route 9 along 97 Street to Downtown and Southgate, Route 51 from Castle Downs to the University of Alberta, and peak-hour express routes (110X, 120X, 130X, 140X and 150X) to Downtown, Government Centre and Kingsway. The Big Lake neighbourhoods are served by On Demand Transit rather than a regular route.

Northwest LRT and transit hubs

  • NAIT/Blatchford Market Station (Metro Line terminus, open since Jan. 2024)
  • Blatchford Gate Station (built, not yet open)
  • Northgate Transit Centre (137 Avenue & 97 Street)
  • Castle Downs Transit Centre (153 Avenue; planned Metro Line stop)
  • Eaux Claires Transit Centre and park and ride (97 Street & 157 Avenue)
  • Nakî Transit Centre and park and ride (Campbell Road; planned Metro Line terminus)

What to watch for in Northwest Edmonton

  • Don't price in an LRT yet: only land for the Metro Line extension to Castle Downs is funded, and in April 2026 the ward councillor called the current plan unlikely in the near future and asked for alternatives.
  • Older townhouse complexes: about half of Castle Downs units and 70% of units around Evansdale, Northmount and Glengarry were built before 1980. Review the reserve fund study and any planned roof, window, siding or envelope work.
  • Car dependence at Big Lake and in parts of The Palisades: Big Lake condo addresses score 1 to 7 on Walk Score and have no regular bus route; addresses in Carlton and Oxford score in the 20s and 30s.
  • Rail and industrial edges: The Palisades is bounded by a CN rail line on the west, Calder sits just north of the CN line, and the Rampart and McArthur industrial areas border the district's west side. Check the building's exact location.
  • Newer buildings: many Griesbach, Palisades and Big Lake units are recent enough to still carry part of Alberta's mandatory new home warranty (five years for the building envelope, ten for structure). Ask for the warranty documents and expiry dates.
  • Townhouse plans: check whether a townhouse condo is conventional or bare land and who pays for roofs and siding.
